Parent Information - Summer Term

Dear Parents/Carers,

The children have returned to school refreshed and eager to learn. This term, our topic will be looking at Traditional Tales from around the World. We will initially look at those written by the famous Grimm Brothers from Germany and then look at tales from other continents including Australasia, South America and Africa.

During our work in English, we will be reading some contemporary versions of these tales, where the characters, events and endings have been changed to create a “twist” on the original story. The children will have their own opportunity to recreate and write their own version of some of these Traditional Tales. Our class book for the initial part of the term will be “The Wolf’s Story” by Toby Forewood, which is cleverly written from the point of view of The Wolf in the classic tale “Little Red Riding Hood.”

During Mathematics, there will be a focus on mental skills, whereby children will be challenged to recall addition, subtraction and multiplication facts mentally. This is extremely simple to practice at home or even in the car! We will also be working on telling the time and finding the change when buying items up to £1.00. Finally, the children will be spending time on solving problems associated with multiplication and division of 2,3,5,10 times tables.

P.E will continue to be on a Monday afternoon and as the weather gets warmer, I intend to deliver P.E outside, so please ensure your child has suitable footwear and a school PE kit.

As part of the children’s homework during the Easter holiday, I asked them to create a model (made from recycled goods) associated with a famous Traditional Tale, such as a Gingerbread House, Cinderella’s Castle, the Giant’s Beanstalk or Red Riding Hoods picnic basket!  The models that have been brought into school this week are of a very high standard and the children have clearly spent a lot of time and effort working on them. Well done and Thank You! If your child has yet to make a model, I would be grateful if they could bring them into school no later than Wednesday 30th April so that they can show them to Mrs Howard and the rest of the school during Wednesday Assembly.

Due, to the overwhelming success of our “Reading Badges”, the children have requested that they continue to use this incentive to promote reading at home. Therefore, your child has been given a new reading badge today, on which they can earn stickers, certificates and prizes for reading each evening. It is particularly important that your child reads as often as possible during this term so as to prepare themselves for the transition into Year 3 as well as in preparation for the Year 2 SATS tests.

Finally, thank you for your continued support and please feel free to speak to either myself or a member of the Year 2 team, if you have any further questions or queries

Yours Sincerely,

S.Bate and Year 2 team
